Sound Knowledge – Marlborough, Wiltshire

sound-knowledgeWhen I joined The Chord Co nearly three years ago, my background was primarily Home Cinema and customised control systems and my taste in music could only be described as, well, commercial (some might say it hasn’t changed a great deal).  In my first couple of weeks I asked Alan (Chord MD) for a list of CDs that would give me a broad range of music and be useful for demonstrations.

I was sent to see Roger at Sound Knowledge in the lovely market town of Marlborough, clutching a list of ten albums (to my relief I had heard of at least one of the artists!).  Parking was easy – on the street, almost outside the little courtyard (Hughenden Yard) where the store is located.  A short walk through the archway into a charming cobbled courtyard and Sound Knowledge is tucked away on the right hand side.

I was immediately greeted by Roger, surrounded by CDs from the latest delivery he had just received. Roger could supply six of the list straight away and was able to order the remaining four.  Whilst there I couldn’t resist buying a couple of CDs for myself – Roger asked me what sort of music I enjoyed and gave me a few suggestions of albums and artists to try, based on this – and he was spot on!

Roger called me soon after my first visit to say my discs were in.  Unfortunately a month passed before I found the time to collect my order.  As I put my head around the door I was greeted by a “Hello Matt, how are you?”.  Although we hadn’t spent that long chatting, he remembered me straight away.  I then realised that he was like this with practically everyone that came into the store – remembering their name and the sort of music they were into.  Roger has a near encyclopaedic knowledge of music and will always be happy to suggest some new albums to try based on what you like.

Now I try to arrange my travels so that I can pass through Marlborough.  It is always interesting (and expensive) to hear their latest recommendations.  I know Alan and Nigel  both use the store regularly too.

Tom Odell at Sound Knowledge

Sound Knowledge has regular promotional appearances from artists –  they play a selection of tunes in the bar at the top of the arcade, sign CDs and talk about their music.  Recent visitors have included Ed Sheeran, Gabrielle Aplin, Tom Odell (right), Nick Harper, Turin Brakes, our friend Sam Brookes, Newton Faulkner and most recently, Seth Lakeman.

Sound Knowledge opened in 1995 and very quickly established a name for quality of service and tenacity in tracking down and obtaining almost any recording. Their Facebook page is a fantastic resource for finding out about new artists, albums and forthcoming personal appearances.

The store caters for CD and vinyl customers and is a very good excuse to visit Marlborough. If you love music,  you won’t be disappointed!  Matt Peddle
